FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) 1
1. What will it cost the Council / Village Hall?
The fixed running costs will be the phone line rental £14.48 per month from CAN Networks, broadband £15.99 per month from Nildram, including VAT. However the project gives a Village Hall only a grant of 50% up to a maximum of £125 towards the first year’s costs.
The cost of running the printer i.e. printer cartridges, paper will depend on usage.
Council / Hall insurance should normally cover the value of the equipment at nominal extra charge.
2. Can anyone use the wireless connection?
No. It will have a security code, so that you can only use the connection if you have the code.
3. Can the Village Hall and the Parish Council share a connection?
The Parish Council connection will be installed wherever the parish clerk works which is normally at their home, or occasionally at a Parish Office. Unless the Parish Office is in the Village Hall, they cannot share the connection with the Village Hall.
4. Why would a Village Hall want to be connected to broadband?
Lots of reasons. Local people who cannot access the Internet are getting more excluded from many aspects of life, so a connection in their village could be really useful. Many official bodies – the council, the job centre, the bank etc – can be contacted via the Internet
5. If a newly appointed Parish Clerk only has a Dial-up Internet connection in his home, is it possible to retain that ISP Dial-up connection as well as having a different ISP for the Wi-Fi Broadband connection installed with router?
Yes if really necessary but why use a slow dial up when a fast broadband is available. The router can accept 4 wired and up to six wireless connections.
6. If not what happens to those personal Dial-up e-mail addresses and that particular ISP contract?
That is up to the Clerk. There are lots of free access mailboxes available.
